Four South African men’s franchises — Vodacom Bulls, 10bet Lions, Hollywoodbets Sharks and DHL Stormers — play in the United Rugby Championship with sides from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy. The 16-team URC has an 18-round regular season from September 2026 into 2027. South Africa’s provincial competitions instead follow a calendar-year programme.
In the 2026 SA Cup, ten provincial teams compete in a league phase and playoffs. The top four after the league phase qualify for the eight-team Currie Cup Premier Division alongside Bulls, Sharks, Lions and Western Province provincial sides. The other six enter Currie Cup First Division. This is a qualifying mechanism, not the straightforward promotion pyramid familiar in some European leagues. The Premier final was scheduled for 12 September 2026.
Women’s provincial rugby was renamed Pick n Pay Women’s Super League 1 and 2 in 2026, with eight and seven teams. At club level, the Betway Women’s Club Championship is a separate 16-club knockout competition, while the Pick n Pay Gold Cup covers 32 clubs. Youth Weeks and the U19/U21 competitions form separate development pathways.
The Springboks compete as South Africa’s national men’s side. Their 2026 Nations Championship schedule includes games in July and November, culminating in a November finals weekend; Springbok Women have a separate international programme. National-team internationals, professional URC fixtures and provincial Currie Cup matches should not be confused with one another.
