The four provinces

Each province has a professional URC side and its own community, junior and youth rugby pathways. Their official websites provide the most reliable local club information while RugbyOrbit expands its local coverage.

How Irish rugby is organised

The United Rugby Championship is played by the professional provincial teams Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht. Their results count in the same cross-border league as clubs from Wales, Scotland, Italy and South Africa. The four provinces are not four divisions of the domestic All-Ireland League.

The men’s Energia All-Ireland League sits below professional provincial rugby in the national club landscape. For 2026/27 it has Divisions 1A, 1B and 2A, plus newly regionalised 2B North and 2B South. The IRFU introduced the North/South split to reduce travel. Provincial junior competitions provide a pathway into the national league, subject to promotion rules.

The women’s Energia All-Ireland League moves to 12 clubs for 2026/27, divided into six-team 1A and 1B competitions. A separate cup uses three pools of four. The Celtic Challenge is a separate representative women’s competition across Ireland, Scotland and Wales; the Women’s Interprovincial Championship is another competition, with its 2026 series played in August. Do not confuse these with the men’s provincial URC sides.

Irish rugby union is administered on an all-island basis by the IRFU, spanning the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Six Nations international rugby is separate from domestic club leagues; European club competition is also separate from the URC standings.

Frequently asked questions

Which Irish teams compete in the URC?

Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht. All four compete in the same URC table alongside twelve clubs from other rugby nations.

Why are there Divisions 2B North and 2B South?

For 2026/27, the IRFU reorganised the former lower men’s divisions into two geographic groups to reduce travel. Promotion and relegation follow the new IRFU rules.

How does the women’s All-Ireland League work in 2026/27?

The IRFU introduced 12 clubs split into Division 1A and Division 1B, six clubs in each, with promotion and relegation provisions and a separate cup.

Does the Celtic Challenge include the four men’s provinces?

No. It is a women’s cross-border representative competition; Irish sides in the most recently completed 2025/26 season included Wolfhounds and Clovers.

Are these live standings for all Irish leagues?

No. The URC page is a published RugbyOrbit match hub. Other competitions are verified introductions linking to IRFU and official provincial sources.
