How English rugby works

Men’s domestic rugby is led by the 10-club Gallagher PREM. The separate 14-club Elior Champ Rugby operates beneath it, with 26 league rounds and a play-off phase. The arrangement for entry into the PREM was revised in 2026, so the Champ title by itself must not be represented as guaranteed promotion.

Below the Champ, National League 1 and National League 2 connect the professional game to regional club rugby. For 2026/27, National League 2 has three divisions: North, East and West. The structure of women’s rugby is distinct, with the nine-club JAECOO PWR, whose teams each play 16 league matches across 18 scheduled rounds.

The women’s JAECOO Next Gen Cup and men’s PREM Rugby Cup are separate competitions. The England men’s Six Nations is for the national team, and European club cups do not count towards domestic league standings. This guide covers rugby union, not rugby league.

Important change for 2026/27

Gallagher PREM and Champ Rugby no longer have automatic promotion and relegation between them. Entry to the PREM follows a criteria-based expansion and selection model, while the separate National and Regional leagues keep their own regulations. RFU ↗

Common questions

Are Gallagher PREM and Elior Champ Rugby the same?

No. Gallagher PREM is the 10-team top flight; Elior Champ Rugby is the second tier with 14 teams and its own competition rules.

Does winning Champ Rugby guarantee promotion?

No. The rules governing entry to the top tier changed in 2026; do not assume the title alone secures entry to the PREM.

How does National League 2 work?

It comprises North, East and West divisions in 2026/27, below National League 1.

Is JAECOO PWR the same as the Next Gen Cup?

No. The PWR is the women’s top league, while the Next Gen Cup is a separate cup tournament involving its nine clubs.

Are scores updated live?

Not on this country page. Links point to organisers’ official information until RugbyOrbit builds dedicated competition hubs.
