Four Welsh professional men’s teams compete in the URC against clubs from Ireland, Scotland, Italy and South Africa. Super Rygbi Cymru is a separate ten-club Welsh competition, with its own Trophy, Cup and Challenger Shield in 2026/27.
The WRU Admiral men’s community Premiership has 13 clubs for 2026/27. Its Championship has East and West groups, while further divisions use geographical sections. Progression in the community leagues does not automatically qualify teams for the professional URC.
The WRU lists 43 clubs in its women’s national leagues: eight in Premiership, nine in Championship and 26 across East, Central, West and North. The Celtic Challenge is different: Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning play in a six-team cross-border women’s competition with Irish and Scottish sides.
The WRU plans a transition from four men’s professional teams to three from 2028/29, with a licensing process beginning in December 2026. All four still compete in 2026/27. Men’s and women’s Six Nations competitions concern the national sides, outside domestic club standings.
