How the Hilux NPC works

Fourteen New Zealand provincial unions compete in a ten-round regular season. Each union plays ten matches, giving 70 league fixtures overall. The draw is not a complete home-and-away round robin, so teams do not all face each other twice.

The top eight advance to the quarter-finals, ranked 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5. The four winners reach the semi-finals; the title is decided in a final scheduled for 24 October 2026. The Heartland Championship and Farah Palmer Cup are separate domestic competitions.

Regular-season and quarter-final snapshot

Canterbury finished first with 40 competition points from eight wins. Northland placed second with 38; Otago third with 37. In the quarter-finals, Northland beat Tasman 26–21, Taranaki defeated North Harbour 50–31, Otago beat Hawke’s Bay 50–14 and Canterbury beat Waikato 62–26.

2026 knockout pathway

The quarter-finals are complete. Canterbury host Taranaki; Northland host Otago. No semi-final results or finalists have been assumed.

Sources and verification

The 70 round-robin scores reconcile exactly with the final standings for every province. A published Highlanders preview has inconsistent totals for Northland points conceded and Waikato points scored (each differs by seven); RugbyOrbit uses the totals recomputed from the individual match results, which match the detailed It’s Rugby table. Scores, semi-finals and the final date were cross-checked with New Zealand Rugby, Highlanders Rugby, Canterbury Rugby and results services.
